In 2015, the Mayor’s Task Force to End Poverty in Edmonton talked with many Indigenous Peoples. Those involved wanted a place to gather, receive services and celebrate. Action #1 of the EndPovertyEdmonton Road Map is: “to design and plan an Indigenous Culture and Wellness Centre.”

Background

The Indigenous Culture and Wellness Centre (ICWC) Steering Committee was formed in fall 2017 and includes members of the Indigenous community, EndPovertyEdmonton Indigenous Circle and City of Edmonton staff. The Steering Committee follows the 7 Sacred Teachings to guide and govern our way forward.

On March 9, 2018, Elders Lillian O'Chiese and Roy O'Chiese raised the Pipe during Ceremony, asking the ancestors for guidance before meeting with community members to seek their input for the ICWC planning and design.

An opportunity to Share Your Voice

The ICWC will have a generational focus in mind, so Indigenous youth of the future, seven generations from now, will benefit from this long needed initiative.  Research is being completed now, and then we will engage with Indigenous communities within Edmonton and surrounding areas to identify specific programs, services and activities that will inform the ICWC'S design.

Community conversations will begin in June 2018.
